About the Directory

Each member of the U-M community has an entry in the directory. Information in these entries is updated monthly from the Registrar's Office (for student entries) and Human Resources and Affirmative Action (for faculty and staff entries).

Individuals may decide to designate their entries as private, in which case only minimal information, such as uniqname, will be displayed. When you search the directory, you only search displayed information; hidden information cannot be searched.

The directory plays an important part in the delivery of e-mail at the University. E-mail sent to you using your "@umich.edu" address actually goes to the U-M Online Directory. The directory then forwards, or redirects, that mail on to the e-mail forwarding address(es) specified in your entry (your e-mail address is added to the directory automatically when you join the University community). Use of the directory for e-mail forwarding means you can keep your @umich.edu address no matter where your e-mail mailbox resides.

Members of the U-M community can create groups in the directory. If one sends e-mail to a group, that e-mail is delivered to all members of that group.

NOTE: While the University of Michigan Online Directory is available to the general public, information herein is for private use only and is strictly prohibited from commercial use without the prior express permission of the University of Michigan. Additionally, because members have the ability to modify their own entries, the directory cannot be considered an authoritative source of University data.
